AND NOW FOR THE ENGLISH VERSION

Where does the Tag Niark 1 originate from?
That goes back quite along way. To be honest, there’s no real origin. It’s more a kind of onomatopeia which made me laugh at the time and which I have kept as a nickname. (a sort of laugh or dark, malicious character with sharp teeth). Currently I am trying to get rid of it in order to sign with my real name Sébastien Féraut when I exhibit and to keep this name for the illustrative part of my work.

What is your back ground as a designer/illustrator?
Since I was young I have always been able to draw quite well. I did several graphics and communication art schools before beginning as a web designer in the golden period of start ups/ web agencies. All of a sudden I got tired of working in this type of company and so I decided to set up my own business which corresponded more closely to my own temperament. From that time on I profited in order to develop my own style and to refine my “créa” portfolio and I began to get clients who asked me to realize graphic “créas”, logos, illustrations etc. all of a sudden I abandoned the web and concentrated exclusively on what I really wanted to do. Alongside this I painted a bit and exhibited in some parts of Paris with friends. And one thing leading to another, I was able to refine my style and today I work with international clients as diverse as they are various (music festivals. communications agencies, clothing labels or snow sports, music labels etc…) + exhibitions more or less everywhere.

What motivates you creatively?
I am passionate about what I do and by everything which has to do with graphic art and art in its globality. It is an unconscious thing which means I can’t help doing what I do.

What are you creative influences?
To be frank, I’ve got a large panel of influences. It would be difficult to mention them all. Several painting movements have had great impact and influence on my work such as Cubism, Expressionism, the Bauhaus and artists like Picasso,Braque, Bacon, Pau Klee, etc. Obviously, the new scene of more current artists is a real goldmine and influence. I feel quite close to the pop surrealism movement also known as “Low Brow”. Having grown up with and alongside artists on the graffiti scene, and having sometimes had the chance to make some appearances on the street, even if I was no longer more active than that it was equally a great source of inspiration. Music also has a real place in my influences. It goes hand in hand with the image.

There is a great sense of balance between order and chaos in your work. Does this occur instinctively or is representative of something specific? (Social commentary? Personal experience?)
In the end that remains quite unconscious. But painting can sometimes be a sort of therapeutic way of representing my worries and doubts, social pressure etc…but in a general way you can interpret my work as you wish. It’s rather the discounted aim, that it can speak to other people. I don’t know much about it in fact. It’s not really the kind of thing I think about. I “ do my own thing” and that’s it.

It’s sometimes quite impulsive. I may want to do something ordered and neat and then all of a sudden I change my mind and decide to put it all over the place. I love balance for its aesthetic side but it’s more something that I apply in my numerical work, the computer lends itself very well to this type of manipulation. For my work “done by hand” (paintings, etc. ) I prefer to have something a little “crazier “, to manipulate forms and textures. To make experiments. To play with forms and their repetition… it’s a very personal thing…and so ordered things don’t have a place in that world.

Your paintings display great depth and seem to function intricately on multiple levels. How do you approach this?
In fact when I conceive a picture most of the time I begin with a vague idea sketched on a piece of paper. Then in working on it I find things happen. It’s a sort of incessant “freestyle” I put into play forms which I add to it. Sometimes I focus on a part of the picture in order to make something really dense which will stand out from the other parts. Then I try to add a maximum number of more or less important elements so as to saturate completely the space in certain zones which allows me to emphasize both the principal subject, generally a central character of the work as well as other interventions. I like the idea of having quite rough parts and others which are much more worked in detail so as to create different levels of the perceptions of formats and colours and to create a sort of graphic swarming. Finally there’s a sort of totally unconscious organized chaos.

Your work is very much character driven. Do these characters work symbolically or are they more free form creations?
As time goes by I have realized that these characters were in a kind of way a sort of self portrait. They symbolize kinds of lost divinities in a polluted world saturated with buildings in which they are confronted with their own images. There are generally kinds of hybrid characters, half humanoid and animal with certain vegetable parts…it’s certainly my environmentally aware side which is coming to the surface.

Typography features frequently in your work. Is this an appreciation that comes your back ground as a designer?
For me the typography which I add to my work most often has an aesthetic rather than realistic side. Sometimes I add bits of newspapers containing texts which can adapt to the universe of painting and that can sometimes influence me in creating that and they can “stick” onto the surrounding universe.
But above all there are forms of letters and numbers which interest me. For me certain numbers or letters have a completely mystical side. Besides, you can find in almost all my paintings the three R’s and the number 3.

You often work with advertising and design agencies on commercial projects as an illustrator. How do you find the process?

Obviously that depends on the agencies and the countries where they are. All agencies are different. Some are more or less respectful of the work supplied. But for most of the time this works quite well and with a good rapport. I am often asked to “do my own thing” without any restraints. It may happen obviously that I will be asked to make some modifications but that’s quite normal and acceptable and within reasonable limits.

Your Solo exhibition is currently showing at The West Berlin Gallery, Berlin. How is your work being received in Germany?
Well I think my work is in the same frame of mind as certain German/Berlin artist of my generation. Having had, I think, more or less the same influences but a different way of interpreting them. My exhibition seems to have been well received by the Berlin street art scene in Berlin, having had the chance to meet not a few of the local artists at the preview. Then the exhibition has only just begun, in due course we shall see what the results will be after it has finished. I felt a certain interest and encouragement so there was some good feedback from that.

We will sum up next month.
